DAY 2 | TUESDAY 4 JULY 2017

2ND OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DE LA VILLE, MILAN

MILAN:

In the morning we visit Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Last Supper, at the Church of Santa Maria della Grazie. We then explore Milan's Duomo, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world; 135 spires and 3200 statues adorn the Duomo roof. After our guided tour, you may decide to take an elevator (or climb the stairs) to the rooftop for a close-up view, as well as to enjoy magnificent views of the city below. Our afternoon is free. You might like to visit The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the oldest enclosed shopping malls in the world. It has blue glass-vaulted ceilings, mosaic flooring and a towering central dome. In the evening we enjoy a delicious dinner together.

DAY 3 | WEDNESDAY 5 JULY 2017

3RD OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DE LA VILLE, MILAN

MILAN:

Our day begins with a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar on the performance we attend this evening. We then embark on a guided tour of Castello Sforzesco, originally a fortress, then enlarged into a princely residence, and now the home of several museums. One of these is the Museo d’Arte Antica, which features the Pietà Rondanini, Michelangelo’s final masterpiece. Our afternoon is free. In the evening we attend a performance of Puccini's La bohème at Teatro alla Scala, one of the leading opera houses in the world.

DAY 4 | THURSDAY 6 JULY 2017

1ST OF 4 NIGHTS AT HOTEL SPLENDID, VENICE

MILAN – VENICE:

In the morning we journey by private air-conditioned coach to Venice. We check into our luxury canal-side hotel, Hotel Splendid Venice, which is only a five-minute walk from Saint Mark's Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. Our hotel is often acclaimed as one of the best hotels in Venice. Our afternoon and evening are free. This allows us the opportunity to explore beautiful Venice, to stroll along the canals, to wander through the narrow streets and to visit the fascinating shops, bars and cafes.

DAY 5 | FRIDAY 7 JULY 2017

2ND OF 4 NIGHTS AT HOTEL SPLENDID, VENICE

VENICE:

In the morning we visit the heart of Venice, the Piazza San Marco. There we enjoy a private tour of the Doge’s Palace, one of the grandest secular buildings in Italy, and of St Mark’s Basilica, the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. Following our guided tour we have a free afternoon. We meet in the evening for a gourmet dinner.

DAY 6 | SATURDAY 8 JULY 2017

3RD OF 4 NIGHTS AT HOTEL SPLENDID, VENICE

VENICE:

In the morning there is a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar on the evening’s opera. We then go on a guided walking tour to see some of the great art ‘in situ’ in Venice. While many works by the great artists are in galleries, much of it remains in the locations for which the art was commissioned. Our walk gives us the opportunity to visit Titian’s paintings in St. Mary of the Friars, and Tintoretto’s work in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Our walk takes us across the Rialto Bridge with its glamorous shops, and ends with a gondola ride, which shows us the picturesque small waterways and water gates that are still essential to Venetian life. In the afternoon we attend a performance of Vincenzo Bellini's La Sonnambulaat La Fenice, a renowned landmark in the history of opera, especially in the 19th century, when many operas were premiered here by leading composers such as Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi.

DAY 7 | SUNDAY 9 JULY 2017

4TH OF 4 NIGHTS AT HOTEL SPLENDID, VENICE

VENICE:

This morning is free to rest or to explore the Sunday morning streets of Venice. You might like to visit a church for a Sunday service. San Marco has a sung mass every Sunday morning, allowing one the opportunity to sit quietly, listen to the music and appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. In the afternoon we take a guided tour through The Gallerie dell'Accademia, a treasure house of pre-19th-century art in Venice and Northern Italy. Our evening is at leisure.

DAY 8 | MONDAY 10 JULY 2017

1ST OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DUE TORRI, VERONA

VENICE – VERONA:

In the morning we leave Venice and travel by private coach to Verona. On arrival we check into the five-star Due Torri Hotel, a 14th century palace, conveniently situated in the historic centre of Verona. The afternoon is free. If you care for a little exploration you will find that just a six-minute stroll away is the Casa di Giulietta, the house in Verona known as Juliet's house, that appeals to the romantics (and ignores the fact that Shakespeare’s play is fiction.) While the balcony overlooking the courtyard was only added in the 20th century, the house does date from the 13th century and the dell Capello family coat of arms can still be seen on the wall. We meet for a dinner at our hotel where we experience some of Verona’s finest cuisine.

DAY 9 | TUESDAY 11 JULY 2017

2ND OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DUE TORRI, VERONA

VERONA:

In the morning Elizabeth Hayllar gives a talk on both operas we will attend in Verona. Following the talk, we have a guided walking tour of central Verona to discover the city’s history, architecture and culture. The tour includes the busy Piazza Brà and Piazza delle Erbe, in antiquity a Roman Forum and today one of the most picturesque squares in Italy. We see the Scaligeri family’s elegant gothic tombs and we stroll through the Piazza dei Signori featuring, on its north side, the 15th-century Loggia del Consiglio, Verona's finest Renaissance structure, and the opulent Palazzo degli Scaligeri. The afternoon is free and in the evening we walk together to Arena di Verona, Verona’s beautiful and remarkably well-preserved first-century Roman amphitheatre, where we attend a performance of Verdi 's Aida - Fura dels Baus.

DAY 10 | WEDNESDAY 12 JULY 2017

3RD OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DUE TORRI, VERONA

VERONA AND MANTUA:

This morning we travel by private coach to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mantua, famous for its artistic and cultural heritage. On arrival we enjoy a private walking tour of central Mantua to help us to understand and enjoy its history, architecture and artistic legacy. We proceed to an exclusive private guided tour of the Teatro Bibiena. This beautiful theatre was designed in late Baroque or early Rococo style by Antonio Galli Bibiena, who also provided the monochrome frescoes in the interior. A few weeks after its official opening in December 1769, 13-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed a resoundingly successful concert here. His father, Leopold Mozart, wrote of the theatre: “In all my life, I have never seen anything more beautiful of its kind.” We then have a guided tour of the grand Ducal Palace with its some 500 rooms. In the afternoon we return to Verona, and in the evening we attend a performance of Verdi's Nabucco at Arena di Verona.

DAY 11 | THURSDAY 13 JULY 2017

1ST OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL ILLARIA & RESIDENZA DELL’ALBA, LUCCA

VERONA – LUCCA:

Today we leave Verona for Lucca. We stop mid journey for a delicious Italian lunch and then continue on to Lucca, a beautiful town nestled within still intact mediaeval city walls. The town’s Roman and mediaeval history can be found in its narrow cobbled streets, piazzas and in the churches on every corner. We settle into our hotel, Hotel Ilaria And Residenza Dell'Alba, conveniently situated within the town walls. This elegant hotel, located in former stables and an adjoining 14th-century tower, is a six-minute walk from the 11th-century Cattedrale di Lucca and eight minutes from the Piazza dell' Anfiteatro. The late afternoon and evening are free, to rest or to take a stroll through this picturesque town.

DAY 12 | FRIDAY 14 JULY 2017

2ND OF 3 NIGHTS AT HOTEL ILLARIA & RESIDENZA DELL’ALBA, LUCCA

LUCCA:

In the morning there is a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar about the opera we will attend at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago tomorrow evening. We then enjoy a guided walking tour through Lucca to the house where Giacomo Puccini was born and lived for his first 22 years. It is now a museum, containing amongst many items, his piano and musical scores. We continue on to the beautiful marble church of San Michele with its large Romanesque facade, built from the 11th through to the 14th-century. It is located on the large square that was originally the Roman Forum in the centre of Lucca. We also visit the church of San Paolino where Puccini worked as an organist, and where on 12th July 1881 Puccini’s Messa, his first composition, was performed. Our evening is free.

DAY 13 | SATURDAY 15 JULY 2017

3RD OF 3 NIGHTS AT NIGHTS AT HOTEL ILLARIA & RESIDENZA DELL’ALBA, LUCCA

TORRE DEL LAGO | PUCCINI FESTIVAL:

This morning is free to rest before our full evening of activities, or perhaps to further explore Lucca. You might consider walking on the boardwalk which runs along the top of the 12-metre thick and 25-metre-high 16th-century wall, surrounding the town’s perimeter. It offers some of the best views of the town’s mediaeval and renaissance architecture. If you can climb the 130 stairs to the top of 14th century Guinigi Tower there are even more amazing views of Lucca and the surrounding countryside. In the afternoon we travel by private coach to Torre Del Lago where Puccini built a villa on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli. This was where he wrote most of his operas, and where he would come for periods of rest and relaxation after the hectic lifestyle generated by his fame and success. It is now the Museo Villa Puccini, which we visit before dinner. Following our visit to the museum we enjoy a gourmet three-course dinner. We then attend Puccini's La rondine at the Puccini Festival in the open-air theatre where, since 1955, there has been an (almost) annual festival to celebrate Puccini’s life and work. We return to our hotel in Lucca after the opera.

DAY 14 | SUNDAY 16 JULY 2017

Following our final buffet breakfast at the hotel, our tour concludes.

For those who would like it, we will arrange a morning coach transfer to Pisa Airport.
