ITINERARY

DAY 1 | MONDAY 25 JUNE 2018

1ST OF 4 NIGHTS AT SIR STAMFORD AT CIRCULAR QUAY

ARRIVE SYDNEY:

Guests arrive at the hotel by midday.

In the early afternoon we go on a guided tour of the Opera Centre in Surry Hills. Staging an opera involves highly talented people from all kinds of disciplines — milliners, wig makers, cobblers, costumiers, designers, carpenters, model makers, scenic artists, choreographers, repertoire and language coaches, stage hands, stage managers, directors, musicians and conductors, not to mention the singers. On our guided tour we see the vast production workshops, the rehearsal studios, and we see firsthand how an opera is made.

Following our tour we have the privilege of attending a private opera recital with Artistic Director of Pinchgut Opera, Erin Helyard and a member of the cast from Handel’s Athalia. After the recital Genevieve Lang will host a Q&A with the artists, and we will then join the artists for a drinks reception.

DAY 2 | TUESDAY 26 JUNE 2018

2ND OF 4 NIGHTS AT SIR STAMFORD AT CIRCULAR QUAY

SYDNEY:

In the morning we have a talk by Genevieve Lang about Handel's Athalia which we will hear this evening.

This is followed by a guided tour of the Art Gallery of NSW, the most important public gallery in Sydney and one of the largest in Australia. Modern and contemporary works are displayed in light-filled spaces with stunning views of Sydney and the Harbour, while colonial and 19th-century Australian works and European old masters are exhibited in the Grand Courts. There are also important collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and of the arts of Asia. Today our private tour will focus on the colonial and 19th-century art. Following our guided tour we will have a two-course lunch at the gallery.

In the evening we will attend the final night of Handel's Athalia by Pinchgut Opera at the City Recital Hall with Emma Pearson in the title role. Pinchgut Opera has presented rarely performed operatic gems since its foundation in 2002, and its productions achieve consistently excellent reviews. The City Recital Hall is a world-class, purpose built performance space with excellent acoustics, situated at the centre of the vibrant Angel Place laneways precinct in the heart of the city.

DAY 3 | WEDNESDAY 27 JUNE 2018

3RD OF 4 NIGHTS AT SIR STAMFORD AT CIRCULAR QUAY

SYDNEY:

This morning we travel by private coach to Vaucluse House where we will have a guided tour of one of Sydney’s few 19th-century mansions still surrounded by its original gardens and wooded grounds. Colonial explorer, barrister and politician William Charles Wentworth bought the house in 1827, a single-storey cottage which now contains a collection related to its particular history, including furniture and furnishings, pictures, ceramics, glassware, silverware and a variety of household goods. Wentworth and his wife, Sarah, developed the grounds over five decades, bringing the secluded valley of partly cleared coastal scrub that originally surrounded the cottage into beautiful gardens which at one stage extended to cover most of the present-day suburb of Vaucluse. After our guided tour we will have a delicious two-course lunch at Vaucluse House.

Following lunch we will return by private coach to our hotel where we will have a talk by Genevieve Lang about Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor which we will attend tomorrow evening.

DAY 4 | THURSDAY 28 JUNE 2018

4TH OF 4 NIGHTS AT SIR STAMFORD AT CIRCULAR QUAY

In the morning we go on a walking tour to discover Macquarie Street, which is named after Lachlan Macquarie, Australia's fifth Governor. He worked to develop social, economic and architectural advancements in the colony and he had a crucial influence on the transition of NSW from a penal to a free settlement. The Macquarie Street government precinct is one of his great achievements and the fascinating history of its buildings, including Sydney Hospital, St James Church, the Mitchell Library and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, will be told on this journey of discovery as we go in, out and behind the facade of the street.

Our afternoon is free.

In the early evening we will stroll together to the Sydney Opera House where we will have a three-course fine dining dinner at Aria Restaurant.

We will then attend the opening night of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Sydney Opera House with Jessica Pratt and Michael Fabiano leading an all-star cast. The Opera House is one of the 20th-century's most famous and distinctive buildings, and there are over 3000 events held each year in its performance spaces, which are attended by an audience of 2 million people. When the American architect Louis Kahn saw this iconic building with its white ceramic tiled surface he said: “The sun did not know how beautiful its light was, until it was reflected off this building.”

DAY 5 | FRIDAY 29 JUNE 2018

Following our final buffet breakfast at the hotel, the tour concludes.
