DAY 1 | SATURDAY 9 JUNE 2018

1ST OF 2 NIGHTS AT DOUBLETREE BY HILTON, CAMBRIDGE

LONDON TO CAMBRIDGE:

We meet in the morning at our London hotel and travel by private coach from London to Cambridge. On arrival we check into our charmingly situated hotel on the banks of the Cam River. The early afternoon is free. You can stroll to the town centre which is nearby, or stroll along the banks of the river. You may like to visit the university’s famous Fitzwilliam Museum, with its rich collection including antiquities, applied arts, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings by such artists as Constable, Hogarth and Gainsborough. In the early evening we have a guided tour of King’s College, Cambridge and we are then privileged to attend a special event, a private dinner at King’s College, Cambridge, with Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music for the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge. 

DAY 2 | SUNDAY 10 JUNE 2018

2ND OF 2 NIGHTS AT DOUBLETREE BY HILTON, CAMBRIDGE

CAMBRIDGE:

This morning we experience a punting trip on the River Cam, with views of the Backs and waterways of Cambridge. This is followed by a walking tour of Cambridge with its ancient colleges, chapels and pathways. We then have the rare opportunity of sitting in on a closed rehearsal of the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge in King’s College Chapel. In the afternoon we attend Evensong performed by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, conducted by Stephen Cleobury.

DAY 3 | MONDAY 11 JUNE 2018

1ST OF 3 NIGHTS AT THE ARDEN HOTEL, STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

CAMBRIDGE TO STRATFORD-UPON-AVON:

This morning we depart from Cambridge and travel towards Stratford-upon-Avon, stopping on the way at the National Trust property of Upton House, with its internationally important art and porcelain collections, and its beautiful, extensive gardens. From Upton House we proceed to Stratford-upon-Avon where we settle into the Arden Hotel, located in the heart of this historic town, close by the Avon River. The evening is free to rest, or to stroll through the town. You might like to take a short walk to the nearby Church of the Holy Trinity, along paths and gardens that border the Avon River. In a striking position on the banks of the river, the church is Stratford-upon-Avon’s oldest building and England's most visited parish church because of its beauty and situation, and because it is the church where William Shakespeare was baptised and buried.

DAY 4 | TUESDAY 12 JUNE 2018

2ND OF 3 NIGHTS AT THE ARDEN HOTEL, STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON:

This morning we are introduced to our Shakespearean experience with a visit to Shakespeare’s Birthplace. This is followed by a trip up the RSC Tower to enjoy views across scenic Stratford-upon-Avon, with its historic town centre and the River Avon winding through it. We then travel to Shottery to visit the historic cottage that was the home of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway. We are given an introduction to the cottage and have the opportunity to wander in its beautiful gardens. In the evening we hear a talk exploring the literary and historical context and the performance history of the production we will be attending the following evening. The talk is given while we are having dinner at Hall’s Croft, home of Shakespeare’s daughter, Suzanna, and her husband Dr John Hall. 

DAY 5 | WEDNESDAY 13 JUNE 2018

3RD OF 3 NIGHTS AT THE ARDEN HOTEL, STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON:

This morning we will travel to a National Trust property, the delightful moated Tudor manor house of Baddesley Clinton and its charming gardens. In the early afternoon, we return to Stratford-upon-Avon where there is time to explore the town or to relax before the evening’s performance. In the evening we attend a performance by the celebrated Royal Shakespeare Company.

DAY 6 | THURSDAY 14 JUNE 2018

1ST OF 3 NIGHTS AT VANBRUGH HOUSE HOTEL, OXFORD

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON TO OXFORD:

This morning we travel from Stratford-upon-Avon to Oxford and check in at the charming, Vanbrugh House Hotel, located in the centre of Oxford. In the late afternoon, Elizabeth Hayllar gives a talk about the performance we will hear at Garsington Opera the following evening. The talk is followed by a private opera recital arranged exclusively for guests on the tour. Following the recital we have drinks and the opportunity to talk with the performers. 

DAY 7 | FRIDAY 15 JUNE 2018

2ND OF 3 NIGHTS AT VANBRUGH HOUSE HOTEL, OXFORD

OXFORD:

This morning we go on a walking tour of Oxford, visiting some of the historic halls and courtyards, and enjoying views of the clustered spires of this ancient seat of learning. In the afternoon we travel to spectacular Wormsley Estate where the 18th-century country house nestles in the rolling, green Chiltern Hills. We have time to enjoy the landscaped grounds and to visit the 18th-century Walled Garden before attending a performance at Garsington Opera. We have a gourmet three-course dinner during the extended interval. After the opera we return to Oxford.

DAY 8 | SATURDAY 16 JUNE 2018 

3RD OF 3 NIGHTS AT VANBRUGH HOUSE HOTEL, OXFORD

OXFORD: 

In the morning we travel to Blenheim Palace, home of Winston Churchill’s forebears, where we have a guided tour of the Palace which reveals not only the sumptuous reception halls and the splendid private quarters, but also the history of this eminent family. Following our guided tour we have a champagne lunch in the Indian Room at Blenheim Palace. Following lunch there is time allowed to wander over the sweeping lawns and through the award-winning formal gardens. In the late afternoon we return to Oxford. 

DAY 9 | SUNDAY 17 JUNE 2018

1ST OF 5 NIGHTS AT THE MONTAGUE ON THE GARDENS

OXFORD TO LONDON:

This morning we travel to London and check into The Montague on the Gardens, a boutique Georgian townhouse in elegant Bloomsbury. The Montague is a peaceful hideaway in the heart of the city. Just steps from the British Museum the hotel offers exceptional service. The afternoon is free and in the early evening we travel to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre where we have dinner at The Swan, the theatre’s Thames-side restaurant. We then attend a production at Shakespeare’s Globe, the spectacular re-creation of the theatre where many of Shakespeare’s plays were originally performed. 

DAY 10 | MONDAY 18 JUNE 2018

2ND OF 5 NIGHTS AT THE MONTAGUE ON THE GARDENS

LONDON:

This morning we visit the beautiful mansion of Hertford House, where we take a guided tour of the art treasures in the Wallace Collection with its unsurpassed displays of French 18th-century painting, furniture and porcelain and its superb Old Master paintings. We then travel to the home of George Frederic Handel in Mayfair, where we have a guided tour. We then experience an exclusive solo harpsichord recital in Handel House Museum. 

DAY 11 | TUESDAY 19 JUNE 2018

3RD OF 5 NIGHTS AT THE MONTAGUE ON THE GARDENS

LONDON:

In the morning there is a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar on the evening’s opera. We then experience a backstage tour of the renowned Royal Opera House Covent Garden including an introduction to the theatre’s intriguing past and a look at features of current productions. In the evening we attend a performance at the iconic Royal Opera House. 

DAY 12 | WEDNESDAY 20 JUNE 2018

4TH OF 5 NIGHTS AT THE MONTAGUE ON THE GARDENS

LONDON:

In morning there is a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar on the performance we will hear at Grange Park Opera in the evening. Then in the early afternoon we travel to Grange Park Opera’s beautiful new home in a former country retreat, nestled in woodland on a 400-acre estate at West Horsley Place, in Surrey. There is time to explore the beautiful woodlands before attending a performance by Grange Park Opera. We have a gourmet three-course dinner during the extended interval, and afterwards return to our London hotel.

DAY 13 | THURSDAY 21 JUNE 2018

5TH OF 5 NIGHTS AT THE MONTAGUE ON THE GARDENS

EXCURSION TO GLYNDEBOURNE:

In the morning there is a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar on the evening’s opera. In the early afternoon we travel to Glyndebourne Estate, delightfully situated in the pastoral surroundings of the Sussex South Downs. In 1953 Vita Sackville West wrote of Glyndebourne: “The graciousness of civilization here surely touches a peak where the arts of music, architecture and gardening combine for the delight of man.” We are given time to stroll through the impressive grounds before attending a performance by the internationally renowned Glyndebourne Festival. During the extended interval we enjoy a three-course fine dining menu. Following the performance we return to our London hotel.

Following our final buffet breakfast at the hotel, the tour concludes.

    Please note: Group bookings for the 2018 Glyndebourne Festival Opera season will be confirmed in early March 2018. The venues and festivals will announce their 2018 seasons in late 2017 and early 2018. There may be some changes to the itinerary depending on final confirmation of evening performances.
