In the morning there is a talk by Elizabeth Hayllar on this evening’s performance. Salzburg is rich in buildings constructed from mediaeval times to the 20th-century and we can expect to see many examples of beautiful gothic and baroque architecture. The combination of open spaces, such as the Domplatz and the small market squares, narrow streets and many shops and coffee houses present an attractive and historically important area which has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour ends at the ancient Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, one of the oldest monasteries in the German-speaking area and the oldest monastery with a continuous history since its foundation in 696. Following our tour we have a lunch of traditional Austrian cuisine.
The afternoon is free and in the evening we will be attending two performances at the renowned Salzburg Festival. The first will be a chamber music performance with Cuarteto Casals, Igor Levit and Markus Hinterhäuser. The second will be a performance by the Tallis Scholars and Klangforum Wien with conductor Emilio Pomárico.

The fortress can be reached on a modern funicular railway which leads from the heart of Salzburg's Old Town up to the city's most visible landmark in just 54 seconds. From the top there are panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. In the evening we attend our third performance at the Salzburg Festival. 2017 marks the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth and we are lucky enough to be attending Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo performed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists.

4TH OF 4 NIGHTS AT PLATZL HOTEL MÜNCHEN
Today we go on an excursion through the beautiful countryside of winding roads, green fields and high mountains in the German state of Bavaria to the fairy-tale Schloss Neuschwanstein. The castle was built by King Ludwig II, an admirer of Wagner, and the King used characters from Wagner’s operas as an inspiration for the decoration of many of its rooms. Next we visit a highlight of Bavarian rococo architecture, Wieskirche. It is said that after tears were seen on a statue of Christ in 1738, pilgrims flocked to the area to see the statue and consequently this splendid pilgrimage church was commissioned and built. It is strikingly situated on a small rise in a meadow at the foot of the Alps. Our final stop today is Oberammergau, the town famous for its Passion Play, and for its many buildings with their beautifully painted (and usually religious-themed) facades. At the end of the day we return to our hotel in Munich.
1ST OF 2 NIGHTS AT HOTEL GERMANIA BREGENZ
MUNICH TO BREGENZ:
In the morning we set out through impressive countryside to the Alpine city of Bregenz. On the way we call in to the town of Ottobeuren and enjoy a guided tour of the magnificent basilica standing on one side of the town square. We have lunch and then continue on to Bregenz, nestled at the foot of Pfander Mountain. In the afternoon we go on a special tour to explore behind the scenes of the Bregenz Festival and see the world’s largest floating stage close up. In the evening we dine at an excellent restaurant in the centre of Bregenz.

Storica 1913).

EXCURSION TO MANTUA:
This morning we travel by private coach to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mantua, famous for its artistic and cultural heritage. On arrival we enjoy a private guided walking tour of central Mantua to help us to understand and enjoy its history, architecture and artistic legacy. We proceed to an exclusive private guided tour of the Teatro Bibiena. This beautiful theatre designed in late baroque or early rococo style by Antonio Galli Bibiena, who also provided the monochrome frescoes featured in the interior. A few weeks after its official opening in December 1769, 13-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed a resoundingly successful concert here. His father, Leopold Mozart, wrote of the theatre: “In all my life, I have never seen anything more beautiful of its kind.” We then have a guided tour of the grand Ducal Palace with its some 500 rooms. Built between the 14th and the17th century by the Gonzaga family as their royal residence, the buildings which comprise the palace are connected by corridors and galleries and are enhanced by inner courtyards and wide gardens.
