ITINERARY

DAY 1 | WEDNESDAY 24 OCTOBER 2018

1ST OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

ARRIVE NEW YORK:

Arrive at our luxury hotel, Warwick New York. We recommend arriving at the hotel by 4:00pm.

In the early evening we enjoy a delicious dinner where we meet our distinguished Tour Leader Graham Abbott, an Australian conductor of choral and operatic works.

DAY 2 | THURSDAY 25 OCTOBER 2018

2ND OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning we will introduce, or re-introduce ourselves to New York on a guided walking tour which takes us to some of the iconic architectural buildings in Midtown Manhattan, including the magnificent Art Deco Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center, and the beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture in Grand Central Station.

Following our walking tour we enjoy a gourmet two-course lunch.

In the afternoon we go on a tour of the Metropolitan Opera House, home to the Metropolitan Opera Company, visiting areas not usually seen by the general public. With a seating capacity of approximately 3,800, the house is the largest repertory opera house in the world. Also ‘the Met’ is one of the most technologically advanced stages in the world with a vast array of hydraulic elevators, motorised stages and rigging systems, which have made possible the massive staging requirements of grand opera in repertory.

DAY 3 | FRIDAY 26 OCTOBER 2018

3RD OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

DAY TRIP TO EXPERIENCE CONNECTICUT IN THE AUTUMN:

Today we visit Connecticut to experience the spectacular beauty of the US countryside in the Autumn, or the Fall, as the season is known in the US.

In the morning we travel by private luxury coach to Connecticut, the southernmost state in New England, a richly varied region which includes coastal cities and rural areas sprinkled with small towns. Our first stop is in Hartford, the state's capital, where we visit the Mark Twain House and Museum. Mark Twain, one of the great writers of late 19th-century America, is famous for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This Hartford home, where the author and his family lived from 1874 to 1891 and where Twain wrote his most important works, has been beautifully restored.

We then visit Bushnell Park, a 50-acre park in downtown Hartford, to enjoy more vistas of autumn foliage. Bushnell Park, the first publicly funded park in the country, founded in the 1850s, is on the National Register of Historical Places.

Following our visit to Bushnell Park we enjoy a delicious two-course lunch.

Our final visit is to Talcott Mountain State Park, one of the most popular places for foliage viewing in Connecticut. We then return by private coach to our hotel in New York.

DAY 4 | SATURDAY 27 OCTOBER 2018

4TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

This morning we have the privilege of attending a private talk on this afternoon’s opera, Puccini's La Fanciulla del West by our Tour Leader, Graham Abbott.

This afternoon we attend a matinee performance of Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Following the opera we return by private coach to the hotel. This evening is free.

DAY 5 | SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER 2018

5TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning we have the opportunity of a private tour of MoMA, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, before it is opened to the public. This is the world’s largest and most inclusive collection of modern painting and sculpture with some 3,600 works dating from the late 19th-century to the present. The museum’s collection includes a comprehensive selection of the major artists and movements since the 1890s, from Paul Cézanne’s The Bather and Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night to masterworks of today. Our tour will be led by an art historian who will show us some of the masterworks of MoMA’s collection.

In the early afternoon we enjoy a talk by our expert, Graham Abbott about the hit musical Hamilton.

Later in the afternoon we attend a matinée performance of Hamilton, the hip-hop musical about the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and the American revolution. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and an astonishing 11 Tony Awards, this is the hottest ticket in town right now.

DAY 6 | MONDAY 29 OCTOBER 2018

6TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning we visit the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous concrete edifice has been home to Guggenheim’s collection of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture since 1959. Today the iconic spiral is considered as much a work of art as the paintings it houses. In addition to pieces by Manet, Picasso and Chagall, the institution holds the most Kandinskys in the U.S. and has one of the largest collections of Mapplethorpes in the world. Our private guided tour focuses on the museum’s innovative architecture, engaging with the building and artwork from several vantage points. The tour also reveals highlights of the permanent collection.

Following our visit we enjoy a gourmet two-course lunch at the Museum.

The late afternoon and evening are free.

From the Guggenheim you might like to take a five-minute walk to the William Starr Miller House on Fifth Avenue which houses the Neue Galerie, a museum of early 20th-century German and Austrian art and design. One of the highlights is the Klimt Room, and its centrepiece is Woman in Gold, the sumptuous 1907 portrait of the Viennese socialite Adele Bloch-Bauer. The story of how the painting was stolen by the Nazis and returned to Maria Altmann after her legal battle with the Austrian Government is depicted in the 2015 film Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren.

DAY 7 | TUESDAY 30 OCTOBER 2018

7TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

In the morning we have a guided tour of The Met Cloisters, the medieval section of the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art. The building and its cloistered gardens have been fashioned from domestic and religious architectural elements from Europe dating back to the 12th-century. The Cloisters' collection of art includes more than 2,000 works of art and objects, such as tapestries, stained-glass windows, illuminated manuscripts, metalwork, and ivories.

After our visit you can choose between travelling by private coach to the main campus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view, in your own time, items from the enormous, spectacular collection of art from all over the world, or travelling back to our hotel.

This afternoon is free.

In the evening we come together to attend a Broadway Play.

DAY 8 | WEDNESDAY 31 OCTOBER 2018

8TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

DAY TRIP TO WINERIES ON LONG ISLAND:

In the morning we travel by private coach out of the city and through interesting and varied Long Island scenery to the vineyards in the renowned Long Island Wine Country. Featuring a micro-climate similar to that of Bordeaux, France, Long Island's East End features one great vineyard after another. We visit exciting wineries, taste a variety of delectable wines at each place, and enjoy a delicious three-course lunch.  In the late afternoon we return to our hotel.

DAY 9 | THURSDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2018

9TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

Today begins with a talk by Graham Abbott on this evening’s performance by the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

We then enjoy a guided walk on the 2.33 km High Line, a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues. The High Line's planting design is inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after trains stopped running. There is a program of cultural events on the High Line, some of which we will be able to observe. We can enjoy the views of New York City as well as the varied fascinating sections of this park.

The late afternoon is free. This provides the opportunity to enjoy the wonderfully central location of our hotel by exploring the city, possibly visiting some of the art galleries we do not visit as a group, enjoying the shopping, or just resting before tonight’s performance.

In the evening we will attend a performance at Carnegie Hall. Built in 1891, this concert hall is one of the most prestigious venues in the world for both classical and popular music. The concert features Valery Gergiev conducting the Mariinsky Orchestra in a program of Brahms' Piano Concert No. 2 with Nelson Freire and Strauss' Ein Heldenleben.

DAY 10 | FRIDAY 2 NOVEMBER 2018

10TH OF 10 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

Today begins with a talk by Graham Abbott on this evening’s opera at the Met, Puccini's Tosca

We then take a leisurely stroll through the Autumn beauty of Central Park, seeing its important landmarks and hearing how the landscape artists, Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux created this urban masterpiece.

In the early evening we will attend a sumptuous dinner, our final fine-dining experience of the tour. We then attend Puccini’s Tosca at the Met.

DAY 11 | SATURDAY 3 NOVEMBER 2018
