Itinerary

DAY 1 | THURSDAY 29 OCTOBER 2020

1ST OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

ARRIVE NEW YORK:

Arrive at our luxury hotel, Warwick New York. We recommend arriving at the hotel by 4:00pm. In the early evening we enjoy a delicious dinner where we meet our Tour Leaders, Taryn Fiebig and Jud Arthur.

DAY 2 | FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER 2020

2ND OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

In the morning we introduce, or re-introduce ourselves to New York on a guided walking tour which takes us to some of the iconic architectural buildings in Midtown Manhattan, including the magnificent Art Deco Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Centre, and the beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture in Grand Central Station.

The afternoon is free. This provides the opportunity to enjoy the wonderfully central location of our hotel by exploring the city, possibly visiting some of the art galleries we do not visit as a group, enjoying the shopping, or just resting before tonight’s performance.

In the early evening we have the privilege of attending a private talk on this evening’s opera by our Tour Leaders, Taryn Fiebig and Jud Arthur.

We then attend our first opera at the Metropolitan Opera House, home to the Metropolitan Opera Company.

DAY 3 | SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER 2020

3RD OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning we go on a fascinating tour of the Metropolitan Opera House, which will increase our understanding of how the company stages such incredible works, and we will visit areas not usually seen by the general public. With a seating capacity of approximately 3,800, the house is the largest repertory opera house in the world. Also ‘the Met’ has one of the most technologically advanced stages in the world with a vast array of hydraulic elevators, motorized stages and rigging systems, which have made possible the massive staging requirements of grand opera in repertory.

The afternoon is free. You might like to use the hotel’s facilities, such as the bar or the fitness centre, but you could also take a stroll along 6th Avenue, or take the 10-minute walk to visit Neo-Gothic St Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the city’s prominent landmarks. Manhattan is outside your front door. Enjoy it.

In the early evening, Taryn and Jud will give a talk about this evening’s performance at Carnegie Hall.

We then attend a performance at nearby Carnegie Hall. Built in 1891, this concert hall is one of the most prestigious venues in the world for both classical and popular music.

DAY 4 | SUNDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2020

4TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

Today begins with a guided walk on the 2.33km High Line, a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues. The High Line's planting design is inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after trains stopped running. There is a program of cultural events on the High Line, some of which we will be able to observe. We can enjoy the views of New York City as well as the varied fascinating sections of this park.

The early afternoon is free. In the early evening we have the exciting opportunity of attending a private recital performed by our Tour Leaders, who are acclaimed opera singers, Taryn Fiebig and Jud Arthur. The performance will be followed by a drinks function.

DAY 5 | MONDAY 2 NOVEMBER 2020

5TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning we visit the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous concrete edifice has been home to Guggenheim’s collection of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture since 1959. Today the iconic spiral is considered as much a work of art as the paintings it houses. In addition to pieces by Manet, Picasso and Chagall, the institution holds the most Kandinskys in the U.S. and has one of the largest collections of Mapplethorpes in the world. Our private guided tour focuses on the museum’s innovative architecture, engaging with the building and artwork from several vantage points. The tour also reveals highlights of the permanent collection.

Following our visit to the Museum we enjoy a gourmet 2-course lunch.

The late afternoon and evening are free.

From the Guggenheim you might like to take a 5-minute walk to the William Starr Miller House on Fifth Avenue which houses the Neue Galerie, a museum of early 20th-century German and Austrian art and design. One of the highlights is the Klimt Room, and its centrepiece is Woman in Gold, the sumptuous 1907 portrait of the Viennese socialite Adele Bloch-Bauer. The story of how the painting was stolen by the Nazis and returned to Maria Altmann after her legal battle with the Austrian Government is depicted in the 2015 film Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren.

DAY 6 | TUESDAY 3 NOVEMBER 2020

6TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning we have the exclusive opportunity of a private guided tour of MoMA, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, before it is opened to the public. This is the world’s largest and most inclusive collection of modern painting and sculpture with some 3,600 works dating from the late 19th-century to the present. The museum’s collection includes a comprehensive selection of the major artists and movements since the 1890s, from Paul Cézanne’s The Bather and Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night to masterworks of today. Our tour will be led by an art historian who will show us some of the masterworks of MoMA’s collection.

The afternoon is free and you might consider taking a saunter through Central Park, which is 6 minutes from your hotel, and a tapestry of glorious autumn colours at this time of the year. In the early evening we enjoy a talk by our Tour Leaders, Taryn and Jud about this evening's performance, before attending a Broadway musical.

DAY 7 | WEDNESDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2020

7TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

In the late morning we travel to Pier 62 at the Hudson River Park where we board our luxury 54ft white- hulled, fan-tailed mini-yacht. We set off for a cruise on the Hudson River to take in the architectural sights of Manhattan from the water. We are joined on board by an accredited guide from the American Institute of Architects who will point out and tell us more about the architectural wonders of this bustling island metropolis. We enjoy lunch on board as we sail around Manhattan.

After our river cruise we return to the hotel. The evening is free.

DAY 8 | THURSDAY 5 NOVEMBER 2020

8TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

In the morning we have a guided tour of The Met Cloisters, the medieval section of the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art. The building and its cloistered gardens have been fashioned from domestic and religious architectural elements from Europe dating back to the 12th-century. The Cloisters' collection of art includes more than 2,000 works, such as tapestries, stained-glass windows, manuscripts and ivories.

After our visit you can choose between travelling by private coach to the main campus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view, in your own time, items from the enormous, spectacular collection of art from all over the world, or travelling back to our hotel.

In the evening we come together to attend a Broadway Play.

DAY 9 | FRIDAY 6 NOVEMBER 2020

9TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT WARWICK NEW YORK

NEW YORK:

This morning is free for some final exploration of New York or to rest ahead of tonight’s performance.

In the afternoon we attend our final talk by Taryn and Jud about this evening’s opera at the Met.

In the early evening we will enjoy a sumptuous dinner at the Met, our final fine-dining experience of the tour. We then attend our second opera at the Met.
