Professor Heath Lees

Half Scottish, half Kiwi, Heath Lees, MA, B Mus, PhD, FTCL, moved to New Zealand in 1978, and was for many years Professor of Music at the University of Auckland. In 1994 he founded the Wagner Society of New Zealand, where he and his wife Liz served as president and secretary respectively, for 15 years.

Heath is a world-recognised figure in Wagner circles. His recent DVD series “Wagner’s Ring - a Tale Told in Music” has sold many thousands of copies worldwide. In 2015 he made a lecture tour of the USA and Canada, and is a frequent visitor to Bayreuth. He has twice been the invited presenter for the Melbourne Ring introductions, and is in demand as a speaker for arts and music groups in New Zealand, Australia, France, and the UK.

When in New Zealand, Heath broadcasts for Radio New Zealand Concert; over the years he has chalked up some 400 programmes. Lately he has contributed articles and reviews for Barry Millington’s UK Wagner Journal.

DAY 1 | MONDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2020

1ST OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

ARRIVE BRISBANE:

Arrive at Rydges South Bank Brisbane, conveniently located near Brisbane’s Cultural Centre and Brisbane’s City Centre. We recommend arriving at the hotel by 4:00pm.

In the early evening we meet our Tour Leader, Wagner expert Professor Heath Lees, who will introduce the tour. Together we enjoy a gourmet dinner.

DAY 2 | TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2020

2ND OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

In the morning we have a talk by Heath Lees on Das Rheingold, the first opera in the cycle, which we will see in the evening. Heath’s talks offer a comprehensive background to Wagner and The Ring, but the accent will be on the music and what you can listen for to increase your enjoyment.

The afternoon is free.

In the evening at 7:00pm we attend Das Rheingold at Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

DAY 3 | WEDNESDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2020

3RD OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

DAY TRIP:

Today we travel to Murwillumbah to visit the Tweed Regional Gallery and the Margaret Olley Art Centre. This important regional gallery, beautifully sited on the banks of the Tweed River, has a focus on four areas: a world class collection of portraits representing Australians from all walks of life, artworks of regional relevance, prints by Australian artists, and the life and work of Margaret Olley. The Margaret Olley Art Centre, which opened in 2014, houses 76,000 objects from the artist’s studio. Margaret Olley, one of Australia's most significant still-life and interior painters, drew inspiration from her home and studio and the beauty of these everyday objects she gathered around her.

Following our visit we will enjoy a gourmet lunch. We will then return to Brisbane.

This evening is free.

DAY 4 | THURSDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2020

4TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

In the morning we have a talk by our Wagner expert Heath Lees, on Die Walküre, the opera we will see in the evening. The opera is special, says Heath since “human beings now enter The Ring”.

The afternoon is free.

In the evening at 5:00pm we attend Die Walküre at Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

DAY 5 | FRIDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2020

5TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

In the morning we go on a private guided tour of the Art Gallery of Queensland. The gallery has a significant collection of some 16,000 items, including early indigenous art, Queensland heritage art, Australian art, Asian art and more. The tour will reveal some of the highlights of this rich collection of artworks.

The afternoon and evening are free. If you feel like a little exploration on your own, the convenient location of our hotel means that it is within easy walking distance of many places of interest. The South Bank Parklands are less than 5 minutes away, and a 15-minute walk will take you across Victoria Bridge and into the heart of the city, with all the shops, cafés and arcades on offer.

DAY 6 | SATURDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2020

6TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

In the morning we have another informative talk by Heath Lees, this time about Siegfried. This opera starts in the lowest notes of a spooky cave, and finishes in heavenly heights when Siegfried and Brünnhilde find each other.

The afternoon is free.

In the early evening we attend Siegfried at 5:00pm. During the long interval we enjoy dinner at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

DAY 7 | SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2020

7TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

In the morning we will have a private guided tour of the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, GOMA. The gallery, which opened on 2 December 2006 is the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in Australia, including in its collection more than 17 000 artworks from Australia and around the world, in every imaginable medium. It holds an internationally significant collection of contemporary Asian and Pacific art. Each work that enters the collection is considered for how it might contribute to conversations between works. Our tour will include highlights from the collection.

After our tour we enjoy lunch, a 5-course tasting menu, at GOMA’s delightfully elegant restaurant overlooking the Brisbane River. The award-winning GOMA Restaurant delivers a dining experience as contemporary and creative as the artwork which surrounds it. The menu showcases the best Queensland produce, using sustainable and organic ingredients wherever possible.

The late afternoon and evening are free.

DAY 8 | MONDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2020

8TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

This morning Heath Lees will give an optional talk exclusively for guests on the tour called “Wagner, Wagnerism, and The Ring”. For more than 100 years, Wagnerism has vigorously affected Western thought, arts and culture. In this talk Heath will trace Wagner’s increasing influence since the 1876 Ring, with lots of examples from many different arts activities.

The afternoon is then free. You might like to enjoy the hotel’s amenities such as the pool or the sauna, go shopping, or pursue your own independent exploration of Brisbane.

DAY 9 | TUESDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2020

9TH OF 9 NIGHTS AT RYDGES SOUTH BANK BRISBANE

BRISBANE:

In the morning Heath Lees delivers our last talk on the Ring Cycle. Today it’s Götterdämmerung, Wagner’s magnificent ‘grand finale’ to The Ring, where the operas come full circle, and the Gods meet their fiery end.

Götterdämmerung begins at 4:00pm and during the long interval we enjoy dinner at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

DAY 10 | WEDNESDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2020

TOUR ENDS:

Following our final breakfast at the hotel, the tour concludes.
