Speight Jenkins was General Director of Seattle Opera from 1983 to 2014. Recognised nationally as a leading authority on opera, a politically active arts advocate, and a beloved civic figure in Seattle, Jenkins was among the most influential and accomplished general directors in the United States. His passion for opera and deep knowledge of the art form influenced Seattle Opera’s many innovative productions, substantial publications, comprehensive education programs and services, and helped build the great audience for opera in Seattle. Jenkins strengthened and extended Seattle Opera’s reputation as a Wagner centre by producing all ten of Wagner’s major operas, including two very different Ring productions.

Because of his passion for the arts and energetic leadership style, the National Endowment for the Arts recognised Jenkins as a recipient of the 2011 NEA Opera Honors. The Seattle Times has named Jenkins one of the 150 most influential people who have shaped the character of Seattle and King County, and Opera News cited Jenkins as one of the 25 “most powerful” names in American opera. In 2008/09, as Jenkins celebrated his 25th Anniversary season at Seattle Opera, he received a Mayor’s Arts Award. For more than three decades, Jenkins was an annual guest on the Metropolitan Opera Quiz. For decades, his voice regularly introduced listeners to opera on 98.1 Classical KING FM, and his CD-lectures on Wagner’s Ring have become a mainstay in opera libraries.

DAY 2 | MONDAY 20 APRIL 2020

2ND OF 7 NIGHTS AT SOFITEL CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE

CHICAGO:

This morning we meet for our first informative talk with Speight Jenkins. It will focus on this evening’s performance of Das Rheingold.

In the late morning we travel by private coach to the Civic Opera House, where we have an exclusive backstage tour to see behind-the-scenes of Lyric Opera of Chicago. The Civic Opera House is a Chicago landmark and a spectacular hybrid of Art Nouveau and Art Deco architectural styles. With 3,563 seats, it is the second-largest opera auditorium in North America, and it is home to Lyric Opera of Chicago, one of the leading opera companies in the United States.

The afternoon is free. You might decide to rest in preparation for our first performance tonight, or you might consider spending some time exploring Chicago. The name of our hotel, Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, reveals one of its most pleasing features, its proximity to the Magnificent Mile. This 13-block stretch of North Michigan Avenue extending from the banks of the Chicago River in the south, to Oak Street in the north, has endless shopping, international cuisine, lively entertainment, majestic architecture and natural beauty at every turn. You might consider discovering some part of the Magnificent Mile at your own relaxed pace.

In the early evening we travel by private coach to the Civic Opera House and attend Das Rheingold at 7:30pm. Following the performance we will have the chance to sample craft beer from Chicago breweries at the Civic Opera House before returning by private coach to our hotel.

DAY 3 | TUESDAY 21 APRIL 2020

3RD OF 7 NIGHTS AT SOFITEL CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE

CHICAGO:

This morning we meet for our talk with Speight Jenkins, which focuses on tonight’s opera, Die Walküre.

Our afternoon is free, either to rest before tonight’s opera, or to explore the city a little more.

In the early evening we travel by private coach to the Civic Opera House where we attend Die Walküre at 6:00pm.

DAY 4 | WEDNESDAY 22 APRIL 2020

4TH OF 7 NIGHTS AT SOFITEL CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE

CHICAGO:

This morning we enjoy a Chicago Architecture River Cruise. The city has an impressive skyline with magnificent skyscrapers exemplifying architectural styles ranging from Neoclassical to Art Deco. As we float down the Chicago River our expert guide will point out and discuss the city’s most famous landmarks, and also point out some less well-known architectural jewels. This is an enjoyable and comfortable way to experience the sights and sounds of the “Windy City”.

Following the cruise, we enjoy a delicious lunch together.

The late afternoon and evening are free. You may decide to rest, or enjoy shopping, but you could take a half hour stroll to one of two delightful sites on the nearby Lake Michigan shoreline. The iconic Navy Pier, built in 1916, is a 3,300-foot-long pier, a 50-acre playground which showcases music, theatre, museums, restaurants, bars, shops and even a ferris wheel which offers visitors unmatched, 360-degree views of Chicago and Lake Michigan. Or you could stroll to Millennium Park, founded in 2004, previously railway yards and parking, now 25 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, architecture and public art. By 2017 this wonderful park had become the number one tourist attraction in the Midwestern United States.

DAY 5 | THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2020

5TH OF 7 NIGHTS AT SOFITEL CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE

CHICAGO:

This morning we meet with Speight Jenkins for a talk focusing on tonight’s opera, Siegfried.

DAY 6 | FRIDAY 24 APRIL 2020

6TH OF 7 NIGHTS AT SOFITEL CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE

CHICAGO:

This morning we have a private, guided tour of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. The Institute houses a collection that spans 5,000 years, showcasing artworks in different mediums from Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Indian, Southeast Asian, Himalayan, and Islamic art. It has European Old Masters, and one of the most admired collections of French Impressionism in the world, including work by Monet, Degas and Renoir. There is also American Art, American Folk Art, African art and Indian art of the Americas. The Modern and Contemporary art includes works Matisse, Picasso, Richter, and other giants of the 20th and 21st century art world.

Following our guided tour we will enjoy lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago.

This afternoon and evening are free. You may choose to stay on at the Art Institute of Chicago and explore the collection further, rest in preparation for our final opera tomorrow or there is so much else to do that you might have difficulty choosing. Nonetheless here is one more suggestion. You might consider visiting the Skydeck on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower where you can enjoy 360-degree views spanning up to 50 miles and 4 states. The most spectacular view, however, is from the Ledge, a glass balcony extending four feet outside the 103rd floor - 1,353 feet straight down. If you are thinking about indulging in this exciting experience, however, there are usually queues with waiting times up to at least half an hour, sometimes much more. The Skydeck, however, does not close until 10:00pm.

DAY 7 | SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2020

7TH OF 7 NIGHTS AT SOFITEL CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE

CHICAGO:

This morning we meet for our final talk with Speight Jenkins, which focuses on the evening’s performance of Götterdämmerung.

We then enjoy a farewell lunch together.

The early afternoon is free to prepare for our final performance of The Ring.

In the late afternoon we travel by private coach to the Civic Opera House where we attend Götterdämmerung at 5:30pm.

DAY 8 | SUNDAY 26 APRIL 2020

Following our final breakfast at the hotel, the tour ends.

Please note: there may be some changes to the time of the backstage tour of the Civic Opera House. This will be finalised once Lyric Opera of Chicago confirms their rehearsal schedule.
