Stephen Johnson will talk about Schoenberg's tone poem, Verklarte Nachte (Transfigured Night). This was Schoenberg's first masterpiece and is an early, still-tonal, work of his, steeped in opulent Wagnerian late romanticism. The term tonal is however stretched to the limit, so much so that at the time, one of its chords was deemed ‘non existent’ by the Vienna Music Society leading to its rejection by them.
